How court fees work in Delhi

Court fee is the fee payable to file a case, set by the Court-Fees Act, 1870. Delhi is important: the Court-Fees (Delhi Amendment) Act, 2012, which sharply raised fees, was struck down (Delhi High Court on 09.10.2013; the Supreme Court dismissed the State's SLP on 12.11.2013). So the 1870 Act rates apply in Delhi, and there is no maximum ceiling.

Ad valorem (Schedule I) is charged on the value of the matter (money suits, appeals on a value, probate on the estate). Delhi's scale is a lookup table, not a flat percentage: the effective rate is regressive (roughly 10% at very small values, about 1.5% by ₹4,00,000). Above ₹4,00,000 the fee is ₹6,248 plus ₹48.80 for every ₹5,000 (or part) above ₹4,00,000.
Fixed fees (Schedule II) apply to writ petitions, bail, criminal miscellaneous, caveats, declaratory suits without consequential relief, and similar filings, at set nominal amounts.
The value itself is worked out under s. 7 of the Act (for example, maintenance is valued at ten years' claim, possession by revenue multiples). This tool takes the final value directly; it does not derive it for you.
